1. Tell us about yourself and how did you develop an interest in fashion?
My name is Jannely Espinal and I am a 28-year-old fashion journalist and trend detective discovering the mysteries of fashion. I was born in the Dominican Republic and have lived in Miami for the past decade. I’ve had a passion for fashion since early childhood. I used to collect magazines and create mood boards of my favorite seasonal trends. While growing up I delved into the business of fashion and how society and culture plays a role in fashion. I began to gain an interest in styling when I was in Barbizon modeling schools. Now it comes out more naturally and I love playing with textures and fabrics while building an outfit.
2. One best thing about being a fashion blogger.
Connecting with like-minded people and discovering new talents and designers. Since I started blogging, I have met incredible entrepreneurs, self-starters, and boutique owners that have inspired me to create stories. The best part of being a fashion blogger is to learn the history of these individuals and connect with them on a deeper level. It is incredible how much you can learn by blogging about fashion and trends. Since 2014, I have discovered the best brands through networking at events and blogging.
3. Describe your style and who influenced you to pursue fashion.
I love elegant, minimalist and classy elements. My favorite prints are florals and stripes. I also like mixing and matching fabrics – my favorite is lace. I could live in boots all year long. I believe shoes are a woman’s statement. It could be 90 degrees outside but I will make sure to wear them (LOL). I have always been influenced by my fashion muse Audrey Hepburn. My parents never wanted me to pursue fashion and always preferred a traditional career in psychology. After several therapy sessions, my psychologist convinced me to start discovering my true passion.
4. Is blogging your profession or hobby?
Blogging is my profession. It began as a hobby and a way to release my creative cravings. I am currently working as a fashion editor for a company called Bikini Luxe and I handle their blog site. I love writing and researching new trends and fashion news.
5. What are your favorite designer and brands you like to shop?
This is a hard question. I can’t pick one. All designers and brands have something different to offer. I love shopping for shoes at DSW and my favorite brand of shoes has to be Sam Edelman. I love Gucci because it is trendy, classy, with a hint of modernity and sustainable. I love shopping at boutiques, thrift shops, and vintage stores. I like discovering unique pieces and creative brands. My current favorite online shops are Bershka and Ivy Revel.
6. Things you first notice on anyone’s outfit.
Their shoes. I am obsessed with shoes. You can tell a lot about someone’s personality for the shoes they wear. If they were sneakers they are laidback. I’ve noticed people who were flats are easygoing. If they wear high heels, they have high goals.
7. One recent trend that you love the most.
I am loving velvet and anything red. Velvet is a soft fabric and a little shiny. I recently bought a velvet long sleeve dress and can’t wait to wear it during the holidays.
8.One fashion rule you never break.
I think I have broken every fashion rule – LOL. I don’t follow rules.
9. Your current style icon.
Leonie Hanne from Ohh Couture. Her style is fresh and very feminine. I identify with her style a lot.
10. Which city do you consider most fashionable?
I would have to say Milan. They keep it classy and modern.
11. What is your must-have accessory and perfume?
Statement earrings such as tassels and my Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere. This is my signature scent.
12. One thing you splurge on.
I love splurging on purses and shoes.
13. What is your favorite item in your closet right now?
A personalized Patagonia jacket. Mr.Dashing personalized for me with my business Instagram name @JournalistaJannely. I told him I wanted roses and a flamingo on it and it was better than I expected. Also, this dress a friend designer did for me. It is burgundy, long sleeve with a V plunge neckline. It is so versatile and I can wear it in the morning or at night. She is actually releasing her new line dubbed Forever Summer.
14. What advice do you want to give to other bloggers?
Do not compare yourself with other bloggers. Bloggers can get very distracted with someone’s else’s following count. I suggest bloggers discover their passion and work on their strongest skills. I also recommend bloggers to read fashion publications daily and keep updated with the Business of Fashion. It is important to be knowledgeable and well versed.
15. If you could have three wishes, what would those be?
I wish to work at Conde Nast as a fashion journalist. I wish to go to Milan and explore the fashion scene. I wish to meet Anna Wintour and sit on Front Row at a Chanel Fashion Show.
